Biopic has now become a popular trend in Hindi movies. Farhan Akhtar’s stellar performance as Milkha Singh in the movie Bhag Milkha Bhag has won the acclaim of the critics and the audience. Priyanka Chopra is working on the biopic of the Olympic winning boxer Mary Kom. Now, Akshay Kumar joins this genre with the biopic of the legendary wrestler and film actor Dhara Singh.
Dhara Singh was born in Amritsar in 1928. He went on to become one of the finest wrestlers that India has ever produced. He won a number of awards both in India and abroad. Some of these awards are National Wrestling Alliance: Canadian open tag team champion, Rustum – e – Hind and Rustum – e – Punjab. In 1996, he was inducted into the Wrestling Observer newsletter hall of fame.
In addition to his wrestling career, Dhara Singh had acted in a number of movies. His performance in the serial Mahabharath and films like Raka Dada, Watan se door, Sher Dil and Dharam Karam won him further recognition. He was a member of Rajya Sabha from 2003 to 2009. Dhara Singh died in 2012.
It is reported that director Rohit Jugraj has approached the son of the wrestler, Vindu singh for permission with the screenplay. Akshay Kumar will be appearing in the lead role.
